  • Organization: HEEMwonen
  • Name: Ivo Rulkens
  • Role: Information Security Officer / Privacy Officer
  • Why: We wanted to increase awareness of cyber threats and strengthen our security culture through training that was both enjoyable and educational. As a housing organization handling sensitive tenant information, we needed our team to understand cybersecurity in practical, applicable ways.
“The game revealed how quickly a simple mistake can lead to serious consequences. That realization has fundamentally changed how our team approaches digital security.”

Case summary

The challenge

Strengthening the security culture within a housing organization where employees handle sensitive tenant data, financial information, and operational systems daily. We needed to increase awareness of cyber threats across teams with varying technical backgrounds, from property management to maintenance to customer service. The challenge was making cybersecurity feel relevant and urgent for everyone, not just IT staff, while ensuring the learning would translate into changed behavior that protects both our tenants and our organization from digital threats.

The experience

The game was received with enthusiasm and genuine engagement from participants who found it both enjoyable and educational. What stood out immediately was the interactive and practical approach that made abstract cyber threats suddenly concrete and relatable to daily work. The competitive element added significant value, making the experience more fun while simultaneously making the learning more effective through healthy team dynamics.

The clarity with which cyber threats were conveyed resonated strongly with employees across all departments. Participants could immediately see how scenarios related to their work handling tenant information, processing applications, or managing communications. The game successfully demonstrated how easily personal information can be misused and how quickly a simple mistake can cascade into serious consequences, creating powerful moments of realization that theoretical training rarely achieves.

The outcome

The game delivered increased awareness of digital risks and cyber threats throughout the organization while significantly strengthening our security culture and alertness. Employees now understand viscerally, not just intellectually, how vulnerable personal and tenant information can be and how their individual actions directly impact organizational security. The team connection and healthy competition fostered during the game translated into ongoing collaborative vigilance, with colleagues now actively supporting each other in maintaining strong digital security practices that protect both our tenants and our housing operations.
