Cybersecurity awareness business - Bouwend Nederland | Phantom'sLab

Phantom’sLab in Construction & Real Estate

  • Organization: Bouwend Nederland
  • Name: Mark Versteegden
  • Role: Owner at Bouwbedrijf Versteegden (member of Bouwend Nederland)
  • Why: As a sector, we wanted to raise awareness about cyber threats in a way that truly resonates with construction employees. Traditional training feels too theoretical. We needed a fun and educational approach that helps employees genuinely understand cybersecurity by experiencing it themselves.
“The game not only created awareness during play, but also sparked valuable conversations afterwards about cybersecurity.”

Case summary

The challenge

Making cybersecurity relevant for everyone in an industry focused on physical safety. In the construction sector, attention naturally goes to on-site hazards, while digital threats are equally real but less visible. Bouwend Nederland wanted employees at member companies to realize that cybercrime affects them directly, without making it feel like mandatory compliance training. The experience had to be practical, applicable to daily work, and most importantly: memorable enough to change actual behavior.

The experience

The game was met with great enthusiasm and engagement across teams from different companies, regardless of technical background. What stood out immediately was the high level of participation and how the competitive element fostered healthy rivalry and team connection. The realistic scenarios clearly demonstrated the impact of cyber threats in ways that felt relevant to construction work.

But the real value emerged afterwards. The game sparked genuine conversations within and between companies. Employees started discussing what they had learned, sharing relatable examples from their own work, and challenging each other to stay alert. This organic spread of knowledge was exactly what the industry association aimed for: awareness that extends far beyond the training session itself and becomes embedded in daily interactions.

The outcome

The impact was clear and measurable across participating companies. Employees became far more cautious with emails from unknown senders, take extra verification steps when logging into systems, and proactively report suspicious activities. Even more importantly, the game initiated a cultural shift where cybersecurity knowledge is now actively shared throughout the sector. Employees have become alert to how easily personal information can be misused and how quickly a small mistake can lead to serious consequences. The security culture and overall awareness within participating construction companies have been significantly strengthened, and confidence in the sector’s digital resilience has grown.
