Cybersecurity awareness business - University of Galway | Phantom'sLab

Phantom’sLab in university

  • Educational institution: University of Galway
  • Name: Michael Lang
  • Role: Professor
  • Why: We wanted to raise awareness about cyber threats in a way that was both fun and educational. As a university, we were looking for an approach that would genuinely engage students and bring cybersecurity to life in a classroom setting, rather than relying on traditional lectures or passive learning formats.
“It made me realize how quickly a simple mistake can lead to serious consequences, and that awareness is something students will carry with them long after the course ends.”

Case summary

The challenge

Delivering meaningful cybersecurity awareness to a large undergraduate class of around 180 students. The challenge was finding an approach that would cut through the noise of a busy academic environment and create genuine engagement at scale. Students needed to understand real digital risks in a way that felt relevant to their lives, not just another topic to get through. The solution also had to work practically in a classroom setting without losing the energy and attention of a large group.

The experience

The solution was received very well by the students. The high level of engagement from all participants stood out immediately. The interactive and practical approach made cyber threats feel concrete and understandable, and the competitive element added energy that kept the entire group motivated throughout. The clarity with which cybersecurity risks were conveyed made a strong impression, turning abstract threats into tangible scenarios that students could relate to.

A small number of participants, around 10 percent of the group, encountered technical issues during the session, mostly in the later stages, with a handful unable to progress past an earlier point. While this was a minor disruption, the vast majority of students completed the experience without any issues and left with a noticeably stronger understanding of digital risks.

The outcome

The solution successfully increased awareness of digital risks and cyber threats across the group and also boosted engagement with existing cybersecurity learning materials. Students came away more cautious about emails from unknown senders and more aware of how easily personal information can be misused. For a large undergraduate audience, the solution proved to be a practical and effective way to make cybersecurity education both memorable and impactful.
