Cybersecurity awareness business - Biemans Accountants | Phantom'sLab

Phantom’sLab in financial services

  • Organization: Biemans Accountants
  • Name: Desiree van der Wielen
  • Role: Secretarial Employee
  • Why: As an accounting firm, we face daily digital threats like phishing and malware, both professionally and privately. We needed an interactive and engaging way to keep our team alert. We were looking for something strong in content but also genuinely enjoyable to experience.
“Having these warnings sharply imprinted on your mind keeps you alert, which is exactly what you want.”

Case summary

The challenge

Making colleagues more conscious of their digital behavior in a world where risks arise from moments of inattention. Most security breaches don’t happen due to technical failures but because someone clicks a link or shares information without thinking. We wanted to address this in an accessible, active way that would actually resonate. Not through standard boring folders or presentations, but by letting employees step into the shoes of a hacker and experience firsthand how easily vulnerabilities can be exploited.

The experience

Team members were immediately engaged and became intensely involved from the start. The situations were surprisingly realistic, recognizable, and confronting. What made the biggest impact were the moments when participants actually got “hacked” during gameplay. These instances generated significant discussion and genuine surprise among colleagues.

The game created an energy that traditional training never could. People were actively problem solving, sharing insights, and warning each other about threats they discovered. The realistic scenarios hit close to home, making everyone realize how easily they could fall victim to similar attacks in their actual work environment or personal life.

The outcome

The shift in behavior was clear and immediate. Colleagues became noticeably more alert when reviewing emails and clicking links. Beyond individual vigilance, cybersecurity became an active topic of conversation throughout the organization. Some employees even started sending test phishing emails to keep each other sharp. The combination of gameplay, reflection, and recognizable situations ensured the message truly stuck, transforming cybersecurity from an abstract policy into a lived, shared responsibility.
